Muslim leaders yesterday said the setting up of a special desk to speed up issuance of passports to Muslim pilgrims was a bait to win over voters ahead of the General Election. But leaders allied to the National Muslim Leaders Forum said they would not “swallow the bait”. The leaders who included officials of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya (CIPK) said no amount of promises from the Government would change their decision to support ODM.

“We have met President Kibaki for more than four times as CIPK and our issues have always been issuance of passports, identity cards, Coastal University and the contentious Terrorism Bill but nothing has been done,” said CIPK treasurer Sheikh Hassan Omar at a press conference in Mombasa. He said Muslims do not need the special desk because like all other Kenyans they have inalienable rights that the Government has to protect.
