The World Health Organization (WHO) yesterday warned countries bordering Iraq to boost their defenses against cholera, which is spreading across the nation. The WHO said it does not see the need for travel or trade restrictions on affected areas of Iraq, but neighboring countries are urged to reinforce their existing surveillance and preparedness systems.Cholera is continuing to spread across Iraq, with more than 30,000 people having fallen ill with acute diarrhea, according to the latest update WHO. More than 3,300 cases have been identified as positive for the bacterium that causes the intestinal infection, but clinical symptoms indicate the presence of cholera in many others, it said.
