Hundreds of people fled a Pakistani tribal town today after some of the heaviest-ever clashes near the Afghan border left 150 militants and 45 soldiers dead, officials and witnesses said. Fighting stretched into a third day around Mir Ali, in the lawless tribal region of North Waziristan, which the United States says is the new breeding ground for Osama bin Laden’s Al Qaeda terror network. The army said the pro-Taliban rebels were unusually well-trained and were getting support via Afghanistan, where the extremist Islamic movement has waged a fierce insurgency since being toppled in late 2001.
