Russian President Vladimir Putin, shrugging off reports of a plot to assassinate him in Tehran, said he’ll go ahead with a planned trip to Iran where talks will include the Islamic Republic’s “nuclear dossier.”…Putin is due to travel to Tehran from Wiesbaden today, one day after he was warned of a plan to kill him in the Iranian capital. There he is scheduled to take part in a summit tomorrow of the five countries with Caspian Sea coastlines, in an effort to resolve ownership of oil and gas deposits.

…Putin’s trip to Iran takes place amid increasingly strained ties between Russia and Western nations. Talks in Moscow involving U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defense Secretary Robert Gates ended on Oct. 12 without a breakthrough on Russia’s stance toward a proposed U.S. missile shield, on arms sales to Iran and Syria or on Iran’s atomic program. Putin threatened during the talks to pull out of a nuclear arms control treaty.
