Click here: The Canadian Press – Controversial Montreal cleric scheduled for deportation Monday

The Canadian government is scheduled to deport a controversial Montreal imam to Tunisia today.A last-ditch attempt by supporters to keep Said Jaziri in Canada fell short Sunday.Amnesty International and several Muslim organizations asked Immigration Minister Diane Finley to use her discretionary power to let Jaziri stay in the country. The chance of a reprieve looked slim Sunday as Finley’s office refused all comment.

The cleric’s lawyers also made an unsuccessful last-minute effort to get the Federal Court to step in and stop his deportation.Canadian immigration officials say Jaziri lied about a past criminal record in France when he entered Canada in the late 1990s.Jaziri has made headlines with calls for the creation of faith-based sharia law courts to govern Canadian Muslims and has publicly denounced homosexuality as a sin.He says he will be tortured or killed if deported to his native Tunisia.
