Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) aims to create stronger trade ties between Malaysia and the member countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), according to its chairman Halim Mohammad. Addressing the opening ceremony of the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Program here, he said Matrade has been actively organizing trade promotion activities in the 57 member countries of OIC in recent years, including participation in trade fairs and bringing government representatives and businessmen through trade and investment missions, Bernama reported. Some 27 OIC countries are taking part in the 10-day Technical Cooperation Program on “Malaysia — Sharing of Experience in Trade Promotion for OIC Member Countries.”

During the period between January andOctober 2007, Matrade took part in 15 international trade fairs, six marketing missions, and six trade and investment missions to OIC countries. Halim said the increasing globalization and liberalization of trade and investment had made it imperative for OIC countries to collaborate and expand bilateral trade and investment ties. “The potential for mutually beneficial cooperation between Malaysia and the OIC countries need to be further developed in the future,” he said. at the opening ceremony of the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Program here.

According to Halim, the services sector offers good potential for collaboration among companies in OIC countries. These would include construction, education, healthcare, franchise, information and communications technology (ICT), and printing and publishing services, he said adding that the top five markets in OIC countries for Malaysia’s construction services last year were Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Sudan.
