A movie about the Italian occupation of Libya from 1911 to 1943 is being made by Syrian filmmaker Najdat Anzour with the help of Libya’s president Muammar Gaddafi, who will finance the film and contribute to the screenplay. ‘Dhulm: Years of Torment’ will feature for the first time first-hand accounts by international and local witnesses of the Italian colonial period.

In an interview with Adnkronos International (AKI) , Anzour said that his film is not meant “to provoke” but instead “to recount a period of colonialism that has affected Libyans and Italians in a negative way.”..Muammar Gaddafi will both finance and take part in the film’s scriptwriting process. The entire project is expected to cost about 40 million dollars.

The Italian government has banned previous attempts to depict the Italian colonisation of Libya in film. In 1982, then prime minister Giulio Andreotti banned the movie “Lion of the desert” for “damaging the army’s honour.”…Filming for Anzour’s movie will begin in January 2008 in Libya and reports say it is expected to released in 2009.
