Somali pirates have captured a South Korean cargo vessel off Mogadishu port, a regional maritime official said on Tuesday. There were 22 crew members on board, said Andre Mwangura, head of the East African Seafarers’ Assistance Programme. “We have no more details yet,” he said. “But the situation is getting really bad in those waters.” The latest seizure comes days after pirates hijacked a Japanese-owned chemical tanker off Somalia. US destroyer ships are currently in pursuit of the tanker in Somalia.

Military officials said that the guided-missile destroyer USS Arleigh Burke entered Somali waters with the permission of the Mogadishu government.US military officials said there is a great deal of concern about the Japanese ship’s cargo of highly flammable benzene.
