Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said Tuesday that up to USD 250 million were pledged by Arab countries, organizations and funds in support of humanitarian efforts in the troubled Sudanese district of Darfur. Moussa, who was speaking at the end of a conference held in support of Darfur’s humanitarian effort, said the amount comprised cash grants as well as well as contributions to development projects. He added that the pledged aid would be monitored by the Arab League itself. He urged the international community to do more to get the Darfur warring factions back on talking terms. He expressed admiration of the Sudanese government stand in implementing a unilateral ceasefire in Darfur. Participants in the conference had condemned the kidnapping of children from Darfur and neighboring Chad and called for prosecuting the culprits.
