At least 12 people have been killed in clashes between local tribesmen and guards at a Ukrainian oil company in Yemen. The clashes occured on Thursday morning in the city of Shabwa, south of the capital Sanaa, according to a report carried by news agency Mareb Press. Reports say that six tribesmen and six guards were killed in the clashes.

The local al-Harith tribesmen protested on Thursday calling for the oil firm to hire them while preventing materials from entering the oil refinery. The protest sparked exchanges of fire that caused the deaths of six tribal militiamen and six policemen. Other guards were captured and subsequently released by al-Harith tribesmen after mediation by tribal elders.Yemen’s president Ali Abdullah Saleh has also spoken by phone to al-Harith elders as part of attempts to end the crisis.
